Dyke House School is a secondary school for 1050 11 to 16 year olds in a deprived area of Hartlepool. The school is also open to the community on weekdays and Saturdays usually up to 9pm and also through the school holidays for 50 weeks a year. There are numerous community groups making use of the school and its site. There is a community police station on site, a Health Development Worker and other neighbourhood workers. The school also trains Technicians, Administration Assistants, Teaching Assistants and Teachers on site using nationally recognised training schemes. The ICT and Sports facilities are used by the community on a daily basis e.g. Hartlepool Swimming Club, Hartlepool Football Club.
Today the project continues to be successful and continues to grow. It is being used as an example to other schools on how to develop community activities. Extended facilities such as partnerships with residents groups to provide more facilities. Collaboration with another secondary school in a different part of Hartlepool to expand the service by being a best practice example particularly assisting with the community facilities in that school. Joint management of the second school to enable change to take place. Recent developments include the local Council holding meetings in the school.
Consultation and information sharing with all participants is important especially word of mouth. Representation on neighbourhood forums is essential to making these links and this includes pupil representatives as well as staff. Making the school more open to the local community so that they understand it is their school and their building. Using links with the community to support learning in school and particularly helping with citizenship. Ensuring that standards are measured by outside bodies such as Charter Mark, Sports Mark and Arts Mark Awards as well as Investors in People.
