[edit]

Short description of the project

The year 2003 was declared by the European Union "The year of the Persons with disabilities". Because Botosani County was in economic recession and affected by unemployment, the mental health status of the people was in danger. Due to the fat that number of the persons that asked for this kind of services was increasing, Botosani County Council was facing a new situation of social services and especially by taking over the County Inspectorate of Disables Persons. Through the fact, that Estuar Foundation provided social care and assistance services to the adults in The social centre in Botosani, we applied in partnership to Social-Economic Cohesion PHARE Programme 2001. Geographical scope: The project has been localized in Romania, North -East Region, Botosani County.

Current status and future steps for the project

The project has been successfully implements and finishes in 2005. Estuar Foundation is continuing its activity based on the results and the acquisitions made through the project. The Botosani Social Centre established and ran by Estuar Foundation is providing care and social assistance to adults with mental problems, others than the initial target group of the project.

Lessons learned

First lesson was the replacement of the "handicapped people" term with "disabled people". Second lesson was learning "team work" and assimilating new specific terminology to field of health. Disabled adults need a bigger attention and care, and that this can be done only inside the community through specialized NGO's.
